- Frequently Asked Questions
Please find below a selection of frequently asked questions that you might find informative to read. Click on any of the questions listed to see the answers below:
Where do the tours start from?
Each tour starts from the nearest regional centre. You will see a notation after the tour name that states "ex" Lusaka or "ex" Nairobi. This means that Day 1. of the the tour will start from that city/town. Depending on your flight details we will make arrangements to collect you from your hotel or the airport as appropriate.
Can you book my international and regional flights to get me to the starting point?
Yes. Whilst we often recommend that you check online for better deals on international airfares, we of course can book and arrange all your flights as needed. If you want to use your frequent flyer points or would prefer to book your flights with your local travel agent that is fine too.
What if I need to overnight before the tour starts?
If your inward arrival requires that you overnight prior to the start of the tour then we will arrange for you to stay overnight at a local hotel - and likewise at the end of your safari. These details will be worked out as part of the safari planning process.
Can I book extra nights at some camps/lodges?
Yes, in most circumstances we can arrange extra nights to be added on or you may wish to take a look at some of the tour extensions offered.
What about children?
Not all safari camps/lodges are able to take children under 12 years, but most do. You should advise us of any children in your party when you request space on a tour. We are sometimes able to offer a child's rate.
Can I get a discount for a group?
Generally speaking you do not receive group discounts at camps and lodges in Africa as they have a very limited number of beds anyway. Where it will help is with the cost of a private vehicle as this cost can then be spread amongst the group. In most cases where this applies we have listed prices for 2, 4 or 6 people travelling together.
How far in advance should I book?
It is not uncommon for people to book a year in advance! This is because availability of space on our tours and at camps/lodges in Africa can get very tight - especially in the peak seasons. Our recommendation is to book as soon as you possible can - this may depend on leave arrangements, flight plans or finances.
I am a single traveller - can I still join a tour?
Most tours need a minimum of 2 people travelling. However, our set departure tours are designed to allow singles, couples and groups to join together on a tour. The single supplement listed on each tour applies to single people travelling as part of a group but having their own room.
Do I need to be an expert photographer to join your tours?
No. Obviously, these PHOTO SAFARIS have been designed with keen photographers in mind, but you do not need to be an expert - in fact, for most people, a photo tour can be the best way to better your photographic skills and share knowledge with others. What a way to learn!?
Can I choose what day I start the tour?
No. All of our PHOTO SAFARI are set departure tours with all accommodation pre-booked for specific dates.
Will there be someone to meet me when I arrive in Africa?
Yes. We will arrange our people on the ground to meet you and brief you where necessary about your itinerary. You will also have a local contact person in case of emergencies and will receive a complete list of contact numbers of where you will be staying throughout your safari to leave with family and friends.
This is my honeymoon - is that OK?
Absolutely. Africa is a popular destination for honeymooners and all safari camps and lodges arrange something 'special' for your arrival and will usually have a honeymoon suite. Just be sure to mention this to us when booking.
I want to design my own safari - can you help with this?
Yes. African Encounter specialises in tailor-made safaris. Just tell us what you have in mind and we can start the exciting process of planning your African safari...
