Photographic Workshops: Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana & Mala Mala, South Africa
Hosted by Shem Compion and André Cloete (both award winning photographers)
Various dates through to December 2012 (4 nights/5 days)
Overview
These trips are aimed at the photography enthusiast. If you enjoy photography and would like to learn about outdoor and wildlife photography, then this is the course for you!
Workshops have been planned to bring like-minded people together to enjoy and learn more about nature photography. With award winning host photographers as your guides (a maximum of 4 guests per photo guide), you will be taken out to witness the spectacular wildlife viewing of Mashatu Game Reserve - an extended trip includes world renowned MalaMala Game Reserve too.
Days comprise morning and evening drives, talks, short lectures and review sessions to discuss and analyze photographs - resulting in excellent on site learning and ultimately, better images.
The course is designed for you to learn and refine photographic skills in spectacular surroundings - ultimately becoming a better photographer in the process.
The group ratio is kept low enough to maximise your individual attention meaning all levels of photographers are catered for.
Please note: This course is aimed at the beginner, intermediate and advanced photography enthusiast who would like to improve their nature and wildlife photographic skills. For the best results, we recommend a minimum of a D-SLR camera.
About the course..
It is our belief that many people would like to take their photography a step further, but they don't have the time, aren't in the correct environment or don't have the skill. Addressing this audience, we present this three or seven day adventure of learning and discovery. Your photographic hosts will lead you through a discovery of technical knowledge, nature experiences and practical application. With short instructional lectures designed to stimulate as well as educate, you will be reminded of the photography basics of light, composition and creative effects with the camera.
Landscape, wildlife, bird, macro and action photography each requires its own technique - each addressed over the duration of the workshop. Shem Compion and André Cloete, both award-winning photographers, will be your hosts. They will share their knowledge of wildlife photography on drives and during talks within the camp. They will also discuss the various techniques of nature photography relating to long lens technique, support systems, iso dilemmas and improvisation methods.
Private vehicles are arranged for photographers - usually four photographers and 1 guide per vehicle. Non-photographers are allowed to join on the photographic vehicle if numbers allow - if not, non-participants will be on their own vehicle with a ranger.
Photographic possibilities are:
* Close quarter photography of Predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard.
* Excellent, open sightings and photography of very relaxed elephants
* Dry riverbeds breaking up the landscape. Elephants and other animals are often
found drinking in these riverbeds.
* General game is relaxed and easy to photograph
* Beautiful plains areas interspersed with rocky kopjes.
* A marsh area, when wet attracts all manner of waterfowl.
* Beautiful sandstone rock formations on the Limpopo River- excellent for landscapes
* Archaeological ruins in the Limpopo valley- part of the Mapungubwe society
* Rhodes' baobab perched precariously on the edge of a rocky hill.
* Viewing is generally open and clear- allowing for easier photography.
* Large Baobabs and Mashatu trees dominate the skyline- providing excellent
photographic subjects.
About the venue..
Mashatu Game Reserve is an unheralded gem in a 35000ha wilderness area, situated in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers. Being an open semi-arid area, game viewing is relatively unrestricted by shrubs and trees - and what game viewing it is! Exceptional sightings of leopard, lion and cheetah herald the large cats, but it is the elephants that the Tuli area is famous for. Once known for their “bad” manners, these elephant are now so docile they walk within a few meters of the safari vehicles.
And if these sightings aren't enough, then let the giraffe, eland, baboons, kudu, impala, zebra, wildebeest, red hartebeest and birds (a species list of over 350) entice you a bit closer to this wonderland. With a landscape broken by deep lying riverbeds cutting through its rocky surface, Mashatu offers landscapes and scenery that tells of a time gone past and where giants once used to roam.
Accommodation:
Without stealing away any luxuries, accommodation is in a tented camp situated in the northern reaches of the reserve. Twin luxury safari tents offer you a luxurious rest in bush surrounds. Each tent has two large single beds, an en-suite bathroom with flushing W.C and its own private veranda to relax on. Breakfast and lunch are served in a main dining area whilst dinner is served in an out door boma overlooking an adjacent waterhole. There is a central lounge area to relax in, a plunge pool and a bar. A hide overlooks the waterhole next to the camp.
Course format..
We will employ the technique of early morning and late evening game drives to go out in search of photographic subjects. After a morning breakfast / brunch, a lecture will be delivered. This will concentrate on photographic techniques dedicated towards those being used during the weekend.
After the lecture we will have discussion sessions regarding the principals discussed in the lecture. Practical demonstrations will also demonstrate such principals.
There will be about an hour break before afternoon tea where-after we head out for our evening game drive.

Luangwa Photographic Safari
with Patrick Bentley - 11 to 17 August & 15 to 21 October 2012
(5 days/5 nights ex Lusaka)
Minimum 4 maximum 6 people
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
In August & October 2012, award winning wildlife photographer Patrick Bentley ( www.patrickbentley.com ) will lead an intimate photographic safari in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.
Often described as 'the real Africa', Zambia has its own special charm and offers an incredible diversity of attractions - including huge protected wilderness areas, vast inland swamps, cascading waterfalls, the source of both the Zaire and Zambezi rivers and numerous large lakes - encompassed in a land area of over 750,000 sq. kms.
A safari in Zambia is still run on 'old' style principles - comfortable but not luxurious - 'real,' not set apart. The camps and lodges are more rustic than in other parts of Africa - and this is part of their charm. They have been done like this on purpose and have not been developed with the 'mass market' in mind. These small, personalized safari outposts are home to some of the most knowledgeable wildlife experts in Africa. Night drives are also a feature within the National Parks (often not available in other countries). This is the land of the legendary African walking safari, one the world's biggest waterfalls, the wild Zambezi river, breath-taking lakes and wetlands, a profusion of birds, abundant wildlife, and raw, pulsating wilderness .......all in one friendly country!
Safari Description
Patrick began guiding in the South Luangwa in 1994 and has extensive experience of the area and its wildlife as well as in-depth knowledge of the African bush and animal behavior. He photographs the area regularly and knows its inhabitants and their haunts well.
The Luangwa valley ranks as one of Africa 's premier wildlife experiences. The lazy Luangwa River, the beautiful oxbow lakes and the high concentration of game make this a special place indeed. With a leopard density said to be double that of South Africa 's Kruger National Park and wall-to-wall hippos, you can be assured of great game-viewing.
Safari Focus
The focus of this photographic safari will be on intensive photography in the field. We will leave the lodge before sunrise each day (around 5am) to catch the best light and return for a delicious brunch in the late morning. The heat of he afternoon can be spent relaxing in the shade of the lodge or simply downloading photographs, charging batteries and cleaning equipment ready for the afternoon drive. There will be plenty opportunity to review images and discuss photographic techniques.
We will leave the lodge again at mid-afternoon and stay out until 8pm to photograph nocturnal activity. When we return to the lodge we will be welcomed with drinks at the bar, a 4-course meal, coffee around the fire and, inevitably, much photographic conversation! The drives will be in an open-top Land Cruiser with plenty of space for equipment and moving around. "Prime seats" will be rotated on a regular basis.
